How to Shop Online Safely in Thailand

E-commerce in Thailand is booming, but so are online shopping scams. From counterfeit products to payment fraud and fake sellers, the risks are real — but entirely manageable with the right knowledge. This guide walks you through practical steps to protect your money and shop with confidence.

1. Stick to Established Platforms

The safest place to start is on well-established platforms like Shopee, Lazada, and JD Central. These platforms have built-in buyer protection systems that hold your payment until you confirm receipt of the correct item. Buying from unknown standalone websites — especially those you found through social media ads — carries much higher risk.

Red flag: If a "shop" only operates through Facebook Messenger or Line and asks for direct bank transfers, proceed with extreme caution.

2. Verify Seller Credentials

Before purchasing, always check:

  • Seller rating — Look for sellers with 4.7 stars or above and at least 50–100 completed transactions
  • Response rate — High response rate indicates an active, engaged seller
  • Review quality — Read actual text reviews, not just star ratings. Look for reviews with photos of the actual product received
  • Store age — Stores that have been operating for over a year are generally more trustworthy

3. Understand Buyer Protection

Both Shopee and Lazada use escrow-style payment protection — your money is held by the platform and only released to the seller after you confirm you received the correct item. Never click "Order Received" before physically checking your package.

If there is a problem with your order:

  1. Document everything with photos and videos before opening — record yourself opening the package
  2. Open a return/refund request through the app immediately
  3. Do not return items without obtaining a return tracking number
  4. Escalate to platform support if the seller is unresponsive

4. Use Safe Payment Methods

When possible, avoid paying by direct bank transfer for online shopping. Prefer:

  • Platform wallets (ShopeePay, LazWallet) — protected by platform policies
  • Credit cards — allow chargebacks if goods are not delivered
  • Cash on Delivery (COD) — inspect the package before handing over cash, though this isn't always possible for sealed boxes

5. Watch Out for Counterfeit Products

Fake goods are a significant issue, particularly for electronics, cosmetics, supplements, and branded fashion. To reduce risk:

  • Buy from Official Mall stores (Shopee Mall / LazMall) when purchasing branded items
  • Be suspicious of brand-name products priced at 50–80% below retail market price
  • Check that the product listing includes serial numbers, warranty details, and authentic packaging photos

6. Recognise Phishing Attempts

Scammers sometimes impersonate Shopee or Lazada customer service via SMS or chat, claiming your order has a problem and asking for personal or banking information. Remember:

  • Legitimate platform support will never ask for your password, full credit card number, or OTP
  • Always initiate contact through the official app or website, not through links in messages
  • Check URLs carefully — lazada.co.th is legitimate; lazada-support-th.net is not

7. Keep Records

Screenshot your order confirmation, payment receipt, and any seller communications. This documentation is essential if you need to open a dispute or file a complaint.

Stay Safe, Shop Smart

Online shopping in Thailand is generally safe when you use the right platforms, verify sellers, and understand your rights as a buyer. A few minutes of due diligence before each purchase can save you significant time, money, and frustration.
